The Best Deceptions

by Dashboard Confessional

This time last year I posted this photo for the Focus On The Grimm project.  I think it's about time I explained the shot...

My talented friends with 40/60 Photography launched a project called Focus On The Grimm a few years ago-- the idea was to encourage photographers to put together images inspired by the Grimm tales. (This was before NBC's Grimm and ABC's Once Upon A Time even existed-- for the record.)  By the time October of last year rolled around, my life was going through another series of changes-- jobs, homes, relationships, etc.-- so having had to battle an array of emotions it was time I finally found a way to express them.

The tale of Snow White, and the scene where the evil queen stares into the mirror...

One day when the queen asked her mirror, "mirror, mirror, on the wall, who in this land is fairest of all?
It answered, "You, my queen, are fair; it is true. But Snow-White is a thousand times fairer than you."

With everything that was going on in my life at the time, I felt like the Queen-- full of hate, jealousy, resentment, and vengeance.  When I looked into the mirror most mornings, despite how I felt on the inside, I still had to carry myself as the girl my mother had raised-- sweet, loving, strong, and compassionate like Snow White.

So when I moved into a new apartment, I found myself with a blank canvas, and set up a makeshift studio in my unpacked living room (and kitchen). Using a boomed Alien Bee 600 with diffused beauty dish, Nikon SB600 with white umbrella, and a 48" reflector, I shot two separate self portraits and composited them in Photoshop.
